This book aims to provide information and ideas to assist higher education institutions to increase and sustain student diversity: to recruit a more diverse group of students and to support these students so that they can succeed in their studies.
Efforts to increase and sustain diversity are particularly important in higher education, for participation in this level of education1 has traditionally been dominated by social, economic and political elites. Those who lack access to higher education or who do not participate can miss out on significant opportunities and benefits enjoyed by others, for participation is associated with more and better employment options, higher levels of income and prosperity, and improved health and wellbeing.
